To be a Rugby Official in Canada, you need to be registered. Registration is important – if you are not registered, you don’t have insurance.
Once you are a registered Member, you become insured and covered under Rugby Canada’s Insurance Policy for the season. You can register as a New Member or Returning Member – follow the relevant steps below:

Officiating helps with your own personal and professional development, and it helps broaden your Rugby knowledge. It keeps you both physically and mentally fit and is incredibly rewarding.
Rugby Officials come from all backgrounds, from ex-National players to armchair enthusiasts who wanted to become more involved with the sport. Anyone can become a Rugby referee with the right attitude. BC Rugby is here to support that process from start to finish. Follow the steps below:

Register for a World Rugby Passport
Introduction to Match Officiating – Pre Level 1
Concussion Management for the General Public
After each course, make note of any questions you may want to ask your facilitator on the day of the in-person course.
Step 2: Find a Course
REGISTER NOWThe 2026/27 BC Rugby Level 1 Officiating Courses are as follows:
- September 27, 2026 - Lower Mainland - Vancouver
- October 4, 2026 - Interior - Kelowna
- February 7, 2027 - South Island - Victoria
- February 21, 2027 - Lower Mainland - Coquitlam
- April 4, 2027 - Thompson Okanagan - Vernon
- April 28, 2027 - Kootenays - Cranbrook
- May 15, 2027 - Northern BC – Terrace

Step 3: Register to Ref
REGISTER HEREAfter completing the in person Intro to Officiating course it's time to Register to Referee (link to play HQ).
You can Register with Rugby Match Officials of British Columbia or with any BC Rugby member Club.
Step 4: Stay Sharp!
After you have registered to become a Rugby referee, it is important to stay both mentally and physically sharp.
Look out for the monthly Referee Development Update which includes regular ongoing Development Sessions.
Review the latest Key Focus Areas for XVs and Rugby 7s regularly.

A thrilling encounter saw the Roos come from behind to secure a crucial 1 point victory. Down by 12 points at halftime, captain Jake Morrison sparked the comeback with a brilliant individual goal in the late in the 3rd quarter. Young gun winger Tommy Chen sealed the win with a spectacular off-the-ground finish in the dying minutes. The defensive effort from Mike Stevens and Danny Walsh was outstanding, making crucial tackles when it mattered most.
