Vancouver, BC – February 12, 2019: The Vancouver Masters XVs will host its 4th annual competition for Over-40s rugby teams on March 8th this year. Part of the Vancouver Rugby Festival, a week-long series of events, competitions and all-round rugby fanfare in the city, the Vancouver Masters XVs is an important component that demonstrates the lifelong appeal of rugby.
Over-40s rugby has a long-standing history in BC, dating back to the 1980s and growing ever more popular each year. Dispelling the myth that rugby is a young person’s game, there are over 12 Over-40s teams in the Province and many more in neighbouring Alberta and the USA. They play an amended version of the rules of rugby that promotes inclusion, fun, team spirit and safety on the field. As a result, there Over-40s teams field players from their late 30s right up to their 80s!
“No official score is kept, and although play is competitive, the games retain a friendly edge, with an emphasis on post-game camaraderie,” says Brian Ball, Vancouver Masters XVs organiser, “Participation and a good laugh are the cornerstones of the Master’s game.”
So far eight teams have confirmed their involvement in the 2019 Vancouver Masters XVs, setting it up to be one of the best-attended events so far. If your team is interested in entering the tournament, use the contact details on this page. Stay tuned for updates from the tournament next month.
