U14 Boys' XV prepare to take on Washington State

August 02, 2018

Vancouver, BC - August 2, 2018: BC’s U14 Boys’ XV will take on Washington State this Friday as a warm-up match prior to the Canadian Rugby Championship game between the BC Bears and Prairie Wolfpack.  The BC team was selected as the culmination of a camp that took place in Kelowna, running parallel to the U16 Western Canadian Championships.  Their match will take place at 5.45pm on Friday, August 3rd at Klahanie Park in North Vancouver.

Over 40 young athletes travelled to Kelowna last weekend for the BC U14 training and selection camp.  The players had the opportunity to develop their rugby fundamentals as well as get a taste of the atmosphere of a BC Provincial Representative Team.  Living and playing alongside the U15 and U16 Boys’ and Girls’ XVs Teams in the U16 Western Canadian Championships was a great chance for the young players to observe their peers and craft their own rugby ambitions.

During the camp, the players faced off against one another in a number of inter-squad matches.  By their final game, it was evident to the gathered spectators and parents that there had been some real improvement in both individual skill sets and collective tactical play and field organization.  Following the end of that match, the players received a final talk from their coaching staff before the team for the Washington State game was announced.  Head Coach Kaprieli Vataiki had some challenging decisions to make given the talented pool of players at his disposal.  With the BC Rugby Age-Grade leagues starting up in the Fall, all players who attended the camp were encouraged to see this camp as the start of a long and potential illustrious rugby career.

Tomorrow’s match will kick off at 5.45pm at Klahanie Park and is free to all spectators.  Immediately afterwards, the BC Bears and Prairie Wolfpack will face off against one another in their second 2018 CRC encounter, with the Bears trailing by three points from the first leg.  Entry to that game is $10 for Adults, while children and High School students with valid ID will get in free.
