After three days of exciting matchups, the BC High School Girls’ Provincial Championships reached its conclusion on Saturday. With Tier 2, AA and AAA titles being contested, there was plenty for the 24 teams to play for.
Thursday’s action saw some seriously high scoring match ups, with 8 teams scoring over 40 points in their opening games. Carson Graham, Shawnigan Lake, Robert Bateman and Abbotsford Senior all recorded significant victories to kick off the event, hoping to intimidate the competition. The intensity didn’t let up on Friday either, with teams battling to secure the best spots going in to Saturday’s final.
The final day of competition brought some electrifying matches. In the Tier 2 final, Elgin Park seized the day to overcome McRoberts. There was an element of ping pong in this game, with each team scoring back and forth. McRoberts led into the final minutes of the game with Elgin making a comeback and scoring in the dying seconds of the game to win 24-17. In the AA final, despite a spirited defence from Lake City, it was Abbotsford Senior who claimed a comprehensive victory 41-10. Abbotsford started the game strong with a try in the first few minutes of the game, a great kick off reception and run. Though Lake City showed glimpses of brilliance, Abbotsford continued to hold the momentum for the rest of the game with great leadership and play making skills from Tausani Levale and Kashish Arya.
The final match of the day was a real showdown, defending champions Carson Graham up against the championship hosts Yale. A hotly contested battle on the field, including a scintillating 75-meter run by Savannah Bauder, finally went the way of Carson Graham 19-17. A spirited resistance from hosts Yale was noted all round and Carson Graham had to hang on to the very last kick of the ball before claiming their 10th AAA title in 13 years.
Overall this was a brilliant three-day event, showcasing increasing strength and depth across all schools taking part. Coupled with such a successful 7s championship earlier in the year, BC High School Girls Rugby clearly has a bright future ahead.
