Updated November 12, 2020 (Vancouver, BC) – Following the Provincial Government’s new COVID restrictions announced on November 7th, BC Rugby has announced that sanctioned Member Clubs may continue operating outdoors only, strictly following their COVID Safety Plans. In all regions, Rugby remains in Phase 3, Rugby Restart, which restricts Clubs to in-house, non-contact rugby only.
UPDATED: The Public Health Order, published on November 11, now makes clear that travel for any sports activity “between the regions of the Fraser Health Authority and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority” is suspended, in addition to travel to and from the affected regions. The updated Public Health Order clearly states that any sport activity includes “practice, training, games or tournaments”.
This impacts a significant number of Member Clubs and their Members who straddle the boundary between the two impacted Health Regions. All sanctioned Clubs located in these regions must enforce this Order with all participants of their in-person rugby activities.
All individuals, places of work and businesses in the lower mainland must significantly reduce social interactions and travel. It remains the individual’s choice whether to participate in Rugby. BC Rugby wants to keep Rugby operating to allow Members access to physical activity to support their physical and mental well-being while we continue to battle this worldwide pandemic.
To keep our sport safely operating while protecting the well-being of your communities, all Members are implored to stay home if unwell, honestly complete the attestation prior to attending rugby activities and inform either their Club’s Safety Officer or Brynna Walker, BC Rugby’s COVID Safety Manager, if they have worsening symptoms, have been instructed to get tested or received a positive test for COVID.
To date, no Member Clubs have been sanctioned for indoor activities, but BC Rugby will continue to process these applications as submitted by Member Clubs.
BC Rugby offices have been shut following the announcement today, with all staff instructed to work from home. A review of BC Rugby’s published COVID Safety Plan will take place immediately to ensure steps are being taken to comply with the updated Public Health Orders.
For any concerns or queries, please contact BC Rugby’s COVID Safety Manager, Brynna Walker, via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone 604-737-3065.
