Vancouver, BC – March 27, 2019: BC Rugby is delighted to announce it will field two Senior Women’s XV Teams in the summer of 2019, lead by Dean Murten and Julien Canet. In the absence of a Canadian Rugby Championship for Senior and U20 Women this summer, BC and Alberta have arranged a four-team tournament to provide meaningful competition for their top female athletes.
This summer’s BC Senior Women’s Program is open to all women aged 19 or older who want to play representative rugby for their Province. The two teams, BC Senior Women Blue and BC Senior Women Gold, will train across both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, overseen by experienced coaching teams including former Canadian Women’s XV player Carolyn McEwan.
A series of open ID sessions will take place over the coming weeks with all aspiring female players encouraged to attend. The selection process is also designed to include the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup matches on May 11th & 18th, played between the Tide (Vancouver Island Rugby Union) and Wave (Vancouver Rugby Union) teams. This annual home/away regional tournament provides Provincial and National coaches with further opportunity to see players in action.
Following the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup, dedicated training groups will be formed on both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland to help both Murten and Canet to develop their final teams. The pathway has also been designed to complement the National pathway that is building towards the Can-Am series against the USA in May.
With the Canadian Rugby Championships (CRC) tournaments for Senior and U20 Women deemed prohibitively expensive, BC Rugby and Rugby Alberta have worked together to secure a “Best of the West” tournament between their top women’s teams, with fixtures to be held in Kelowna on Jun 7th & 9th. This tournament will be free to compete for all athletes on the BC Rugby Senior Women’s teams, continuing the commitment to removing barriers to play for top athletes.
Any female players interested in representing BC this summer who have not already been involved in an ID session should contact Team Managers Chris Sheperd & Haley Glendinning.
