Langley, BC – April 22, 2019: The Langley Rugby Club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations are well underway. On Saturday, April 13 the LRC organization hosted their annual alumni day celebration. The event took place during the last scheduled league games of the year.
The incredible day not only brought the LRC community together, but served as an event to showcase the 50th anniversary gala scheduled for Saturday, June 1 and the pre-gala social on May 31. The weather was brutal with a torrential down pour and gale force winds. But this is did not deter over 350 supporters from enjoying an incredible day of rugby, socializing and honouring.
In addition to excellent rugby, the day had many other awesome components. Some highlights include the lone bagpiper playing a number of tunes in honour of the rugby players who have been lost throughout the years. Someone has to pay the piper. His payment was the privilege of playing his pipes in front of an amazing crowd honoring many incredible players. It was truly humbling as the accompanying moment of silence allowed the crowd to concentrate on the fallen players who have contributed so much to Langley rugby Since 1969.
Another highlight occurred when six members of the original 1969 were introduced to the crowd wearing retro jerseys from the original year. The introduction was especially poignant as the veteran players stood behind an extra large photo of themselves from their their original year of existence. Things happen in threes. The third highlight was the group photo where all current players and alumni took to the pitch to form the phrase LRC 50. The alumni day was all about the rugby. Kudos to both Richmond and Kamloops rugby clubs who competed relentlessly on the pitch against Langley from whistle to whistle.
