Vancouver, BC – February 8, 2019: After a relatively smooth Fall season, the weather gods have thrown us the first curveball of the 2018/19 BC Rugby Senior Men’s and Women’s Season. The prolonged cold snap that has affected much of the Island and Lower Mainland this week has brought about wide-scale field closures, with snow and freezing temperatures forecast to continue into the weekend. As a result, the BC Rugby Competition Committee has made the decision to cancel all scheduled matches for this weekend. With next weekend set as a designated “make-up” weekend in the schedule, hopefully there will be limited overall disruption to the rest of the season.
BC Rugby Competitions Committee statement in full:
“The current weather conditions and the forecasts for February 9, 2019 are such that field conditions most likely jeopardise Player safety which would be in contravention of Law 1.1 of the Game. There is also the potential of safety risk in terms of transit to venues. Therefore in accordance with the Rules of Competition guiding principles to ensure Player Safety, the BC Rugby Competition Committee has cancelled all scheduled matches this weekend.
February 16, 2019 is a scheduled make up weekend for ALL leagues.
The BC Rugby Rules of Competition 5.2 a states that:
Schedule of Make-Up Matches – unless otherwise approved by the Committee, make-up Matches shall be Played in the order in which they were cancelled, that is, the first Match cancelled shall be the first Match to be Played on the make-up date.
All games cancelled due to weather this weekend will be re-scheduled for next weekend, unless other arrangements are approved by the Committee. Please email email@example.com to make any requests for their consideration.
Full protocol for rescheduling can be found in Section 5 of the Rules of Competition.”
