Victoria, BC – November 15, 2018: The University of Victoria is set to host the 2nd Annual Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship in just over a week. Taking place between November 21-25, six teams including Guelph Gryphons, Queen’s Gaels, UBC Thunderbirds, Victoria Vikes, Concordia Stingers and the University of New Brunswick Ironmen will battle it out to claim the title. The tournament will be played at Wallace Field and Centennial Stadium, with all games webcast live on the Rugby Canada facebook page.
Defending champions UBC are back to defend the title that they claimed in a 37-12 victory over UVic in Ontario last year. Also returning are inaugural hosts, Guelph Gryphons and Concordia Stingers. New additions to the schedule come in the form of University of New Brunswick Ironmen and Queen’s Gaels, reigning Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Champions. More information about the teams competing in this year’s tournament can be found in the Tournament Preview Article on the UVic Vikes website.
Hot off the heals of the USPORT Women’s Rugby Championships at the start of the month, the men’s competition is likely to be a fiercely contested event, with a number of promising young national talents spread throughout the six teams. With both UBC and UVic already battle-hardened from their matches in the 2018-19 BC Rugby Men’s Premier League, there are high hopes for more explosive matchups as the tournament progresses.
