BC Girls Shine in Improved Canada U20 performance vs England

August 18, 2018

Halifax, NS - August 18, 2018: Canada’s Women’s U20 Rugby Team dropped their third and final game of the Tri-Nations Cup 27-17 to England on Saturday afternoon at Wanderers Ground in downtown Halifax.  Despite being beaten for a second time by the touring England U20 Women'sXV, the match was a marked improvement on their first encounter and once again saw BC athletes making some marked contributions.  Victoria's Sophie de Goede, who has led from the front in her role as captain for the Tri-Nations tournament, and Madison Gold each scored tries in the game, along with Hannah Daniels (Sutton, ON), while Abbotsford's Tausani Levale added two points off the boot. These were not just solo performances though, as the whole team stepped up their game and posed a much more resolute opposition to the England players.  The two sides traded early scores before England was able to grind out a bit of breathing space to lead 15-5 at the half, the wet weather doubtless reminding the visitors of home.  England got the better start in the second half and secured 12 unanswered points to hold an imposing 27-5 lead over the Canadian Women.  Displaying some real resilience, the home side refused to go down without a fight.  First Gold, then Daniels, produced the finishing moves in some well worked offensive plays, bringing the score up to 27-17.  Were the game clock still to have had another 10 minutes left, Canada could well have added more points to their tally and put England under some real pressure.  As it was, the final whistle came about all too soon, halting the Canadian fightback and securing the win, and tournament title, for England.  With the 27-17 loss, Canada finishes the three-team tournament with a 1-2 record in second place behind England.
