Kamloops Rugby Sevens 2017 - Report & Results

October 25, 2017

This weekend the 2017 Kamloops Rugby Sevens tournament showcased some of the best young rugby talent from across the province.  Taking place across three venues, Exhibition Park, South Kamloops Secondary School and Valleyview Secondary School, 136 games were contested by over 300 athletes in the U14, U16 and U18 divisions.

The event has exploded in popularity, with almost triple the number of sides taking part compared with last year.  Even more impressive is the distance many athletes travelled to take part, with teams coming from Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Nelson, Prince George & Williams Lake (to name a few) to join teams from Kamloops, Kelowna and The Okanagan.

There was some fantastic rugby on display for those watching from the sidelines, the Rugby Sevens format providing an ideal mix of skill, speed and strength.  With almost 32 hours of competitive rugby taking place over the two days, there was rarely a dull moment.  Even some thoroughly autumnal weather on Saturday wasn’t enough to dampen spirits, as players dug deep to battle both elements and the opposition.  This determination was rewarded on Sunday when the weather gods delivered a perfect combination of blue skies and sunshine.   As an extra bonus, Canadian National Team stars Phil Mack and Brock Staller were in attendance, hosting skills sessions for the U16 and U18 boys.  These sessions were eagerly attended, with the players revelling in the chance to learn from two of Canada's elite male players.

On the pitch, there were a number of hotly contested games, with a third of all matches decided by a gap of fewer than 10 points.  In the end, the 24 podium places available at the tournament were occupied by teams from 14 different clubs/regions.  This, above all else, demonstrated the variety of talent that exists in youth rugby in BC today.

BC Rugby would like to thank all of the players, match officials, parents and coaches for their enthusiasm and contribution over the weekend. It was fantastic to see such a great celebration of rugby in the BC interior and to have so many teams make the journey to attend. The 2017 Kamloops Rugby Sevens was a great success, made possible by contributions from more people than we can name. We hope that you enjoyed the tournament and are already looking forward to next year....we certainly are!
