PRCs off to a great start on 150th anniversary of Canada

July 02, 2017

Burnaby Lake Rugby Club grounds played host to the first day of the Provincial Regional Championships, proudly sponsored by B2Gold.  Blue skies, lush green pitches and maple leaf flags fluttering in the breeze created a stunning backdrop for a wonderful start to this year’s tournament.  Some fantastic rugby matches and a buzzing atmosphere were a fitting way to honour this extra special Canada Day celebration.

Teams arrived from all across the province in the early morning sun, keenly anticipating their first opportunities to spar with the opposition. Soon, four separate fields were alive with rugby action, spectators packed along side lines and shouting on their encouragement.  There were some great displays of skill, strength, technique and power on display across the age groups.  Some matches were very tight affairs, only separated by 7 points or less at the final whistle.  A few big scores were also racked up, as teams settled in to their rhythm.

During a pause in the day’s schedule, a wonderful moment played out, with players, coaches and parents all coming together in front of the clubhouse to mark a moment of silence in memory of Ric Suggitt who passed away earlier this week.  Ric loved everything about rugby and the passion and excitement displayed by the teams today would doubtless have brought a smile to his face.

By the end of the day, 39 matches had been played, over 900 points had been tallied up on the scoreboard and both players and officials alike were thoroughly exhausted from playing in the scorching sunlight (thankfully plenty of water and sun cream was available).  A marvellous experience was shared by everyone in attendance and there was a real sense of excitement ahead of Day 2 of the tournament.  With all-important standings to play for across all age groups and genders, we can only expect more of the same captivating rugby action tomorrow.

Thank you to all players, coaching and support staff, match officials, parents and spectators for such a great start to the tournament.
