Victoria, BC - Touring teams from Down High School, Northern Ireland are set to take part in exhibition fixtures facing off against two of the South Island’s Junior Tide Representative Teams on Monday evening, June 30th at Windsor Park.
Down High’s one Canadian stop will set the South Island Jr. Tide U16 and U18 Rep rugby teams against a formidable Irish side who recently competed well into their final rounds of their Provincial Schools Cup Competition.
U16 Tide Head Coach Spencer Robinson stated, “It sets our teams up well, providing an opportunity to test ourselves against a high level competition before we enter our Provincial Regional Championships. Down High has played against the Jr. Tide on previous tours and has always been a competitive, experienced side.”
U18 Tide Head Coach Matt Mortenson added “It is a great opportunity for the local rugby community to see our young up and coming players competing against international sides.”
On hand at this past Tuesday night’s U16 Tide practice was the Manager of the National Men’s Program Gareth Rees, who presented the team with their Tide jerseys and gave them words of encouragement for the upcoming game on Monday night.
The Tide Junior Program represents athletes from the lower island selected to compete in U18, U16 and U15 Provincial Regional Championships. The Provincial Rugby Championship Tournament takes place at UBC. The U15 team competes June 28 and 29, followed by the U16 and u18 competition July 4-6, 2014.
