VANCOUVER, BC - Dean Murten has been appointed head coach of the British Columbia senior women's provincial team it was announced today by BC Rugby.
Currently the Director of Rugby for club side UBC Old Boy Ravens, Murten has an extensive background working with both age grade and senior players. A recent arrival to British Columbia, Murten served as assistant coach for the UBC Thunderbirds women's program this past Fall.
Prior to coaching in BC, Murten worked as Director of Development for the Saskatchewan Rugby Union where he was head coach of the senior women's provincial team and coached with the U16 and U18 men's teams. Murten has also been involved with representative rugby with Rugby Canada's U17 men's team and was an assistant coach with the Prairie Wolf Pack U19 program.
“Dean has experience in the NWL context and has worked with senior women players for a number of years," said Dave Brown, BC Rugby Provincial Coach and Development Manager. "In addition, he has been involved in Rugby Canada national programs and has worked closely with Francois Ratier, head coach of the senior women's national team. We are looking forward to the expertise that Dean will bring to the program.”
Murten's preparations for the NWL will see him attending senior women's club games and Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup fixtures, as well as holding weekly sessions with a core group of players in Burnaby.
"Having worked with UBC's women's program and seeing some club rugby last year, I see a great opportunity to work with experienced players and to strengthen the program by adding youth," said Murten. "Throughout the season I'll be monitoring their fitness and skill development. I plan to improve their strength and conditioning as well as core and position skills."
"This program must be player-centred and I want the team to be fast, powerful and have outstanding basics," Murten said when discussing his philosophy for the program. "I am not all about winning; I am more about performance, process and development. I want a destructive, defensive team that has a fear of allowing the opposition to score."
Murten will be coaching BC at the 2014 National Women's League Finals at Twin Elm Rugby Park in Ottawa this summer. BC last captured a senior women's national title in 2010 but has since finished third in 2013 and 2011, and as runner-ups in 2012.
