VICTORIA, BC - The 2014 rugby season is officially underway and although the Victoria International Youth Sevens isn't until July 11-12, Tournament Director Shane Thompson says preparations are already in full swing.

This will be the fourth year for the competition, now a major event for youth rugby players looking to make their mark in sevens. National team selectors will once again be in attendance as they look to the next generation of athletes to begin preparing for future Olympic Games and Sevens World Series tournaments.

"The Victoria tournament is a major part of our BC Elite Youth Sevens program and is now an important date on the calendar for teams across Canada and the United States," Thompson added. "Canadian national team head coach Geraint John has been coming to this tournament for the last few years and it's now a key selection tool in the Maple Leafs (Canada development) pathway."

The Victoria International Youth Sevens has featured a number of players currently competing for Canada at the senior men's level including Justin Douglas (Abbotsford, BC), Pat Kay (Duncan, BC) and 2012 Canada Young Player of the Year Lucas Hammond (Toronto, Ont).

Hosted at the University of Victoria, the tournament continues to grow and now features U16 and U14 boys divisions as well as a U18 women's competition. Thompson is hoping to attract more teams from across the province and country this year.

The tournament also serves as a final tune up for BC regional sides ahead of the BC Summer Games which are slated this year for July 17-20 in Nanaimo. The BC Summer Games will feature sevens rugby for U14 Boys and U17 Girls.

"UVic does a great job hosting the Victoria tournament providing youth rates at the residences and great meal packages," Thompson added. "We also have access to top level facilities and it's always exciting for our young players to be able to compete on the main pitch at Centennial Stadium."
