VANCOUVER, BC – Preparations are currently underway to send a Canadian invitational youth side to Bermuda in March. Tour Manager Rick Bourne is currently holding training sessions for U15s (born in 1999), U14s (2000) and U13s (2001) in Vancouver and is extending an invite to attend Tuesday night training sessions at Jericho Park to any eligible players. Practices are currently running at 7:00pm.
"The experience is geared towards youngsters enjoying the game and exposing them to an international tour," said Bourne. "Our roster right now is largely made up of players from Newfoundland, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland but we are looking to add more this year."
The inaugural trip in 2013 saw U13s and U14s head south for a fun-filled week. This year the tour party is expanding to include U15s and similar to last year, parents and families are encouraged to come along.
The first tour was organized by Bourne, Rugby Canada's former Chairman, to introduce players to international rugby at a younger age. The trip will involve teams from the North American Caribbean Rugby Association, also known as the NACRA region. The Canadian teams will play against local club, community and school sides during their trip.
"We will be playing Sevens and 12s where kids can get some exposure against good opposition," Bourne added. "The tour was a lot of fun last year with a great hotel, beach and swimming pool. We had great hosts down there with bbq's and training facilities that were just minutes away from where we were staying."
Players currently involved are from a range of clubs including UBCOB Ravens, Meraloma, Capilano, Bayside and Vancouver Rowing Club. Bourne is hoping to have more players from regions outside of the Lower Mainland and is hoping to see the addition of players from provinces outside of BC.
The player fee will be approximately $1500 and includes the flight costs, hotel stay, food and Canada kit. The touring party will depart on March 12th and plans to return on March 20th.
