BC Rugby junior updates - Abbotsford, Comox, CW clinch divisions

VANCOUVER, BC - The 2013 Fall season junior playoffs are well underway with a number of regional and provincial titles being won this past weekend. Abbotsford's U18 women repeated as provincial champions, Comox took the Island men's U18 division and Abbotsford's U15 Boys took the Lower Mainland division title. In the U16 men's division, Castaway Wanderers won the Island competition to earn a berth in the provincial final against Lower Mainland reps Bayside Sharks.

Along with this Sunday's U16 final, the Lower Mainland U17 and U19 playoffs will be held this weekend.


Lower Mainland U19 Men - Sat. November 30th:
TIER 1 FINAL:  Bayside at UBCOB Ravens (Jericho Park) 10:00am
TIER 2 SEMIFINAL:  Surrey at Langley (Crush Crescent) 11:00am

Lower Mainland U17 Men - Sun. December 1st:
TIER 1 FINAL:  Abbotsford at Capilano (Klahanie Park) 12:30pm

U16 Men - Sun. December 1st:
Castaway Wanderers at Bayside Sharks (South Surrey Athl Park) 1:00pm


Provincial Under-18 Women
Led by Rugby Canada Female Coach of the Year, Abbotsford's U18 women completed a rare three-peat on Sunday afternoon when they defeated Cowichan for another provincial club title. Sidney Stoltz, Cassie Baldo, Lauren Kerr, Nakisa Levale and Gurpreet Dhaliwal each crossed over for tries with two conversions provided by Chantal McLean for the 29-12 win. Abbotsford-1 had gone 4-0-1 in the regular season. 

Island U18 Men
The no.2 seed Comox Kickers upset the previously undefeated Castaway Wanderers in the Island U18 men's final on Sunday, defeating the hosts 31-29. More to follow.

Provincial U16 Men
The U16 division is new to age grade club rugby and will see Island reps CW travel to Bayside for the provincial final on Sunday. CW were convincing winners in the Island final, defeating Velox 59-0. Tries were recorded by Carter White, Gavin Kratz, Jim Newman, Brandon Schellenberger, Connor King, Josh Kahn, Ben O'Flynn, Myles Duncan and Sam Barclay. Fly half Brennig Provost kicked seven conversions in the win. Bayside had been competing in the U17 Tier Two competition and were involved in a playoff round against U16 Capilano. Bayside defeated Caps 34-12 in the playoffs with the second game not played due to weather.
The U16 provincial final is now slated for December 1st at South Surrey Athletic Park. Kickoff will be at 1:00pm.

Lower Mainland U15 Boys
Abbotsford won the U15 Lower Mainland division final on November 24th, defeating Capilano RFC by a score of 36-0. Anton Phonsavatdy paced Abby with four tries with additional tallies scored by Callum McRae and Diego Zuniga. Jayden Ned tacked on three conversions in the win. Abbotsford had gone 5-0 during the regular season.
