The VIRU league moves into Times Cup play this weekend with James Bay travelling to Cowichan, Nanaimo heading to Castaway Wanderers, the Velox Academy trekking to Comox, and Port Alberni Black Sheep hosting the UVic Norsemen.
The Times Cup is an eight team and six game schedule involving five of the six VIRU Cowichan Cup clubs, and the three first division clubs of the Island premier teams. The winner will be the team with the best record following the six game schedule.
TIMES CUP STANDINGS
The Times Cup is a historic VIRU cup, traditionally awarded to the first division Island Champion. This is in relation to the Barnard Cup, given to the now Island Premier or Elite Champion. The Velox Valhallians were winners of the 2012 – 13 Times Cup, defeating eventual Ceili’s league winners UVic Norseman in the final. The Valhallians moved to the Barnard Cup this year, competing in a four team, three game round robin in September with Castaway Wanderers, James Bay and UVic Vikes. The Vikes went through the round robin undefeated and look to vie for the Barnard Cup Friday November 29th under the lights at Centennial Stadium against defending Rounsfell Cup champions James Bay.
A look at the records below see the Cowichan Piggies holding a firm three point lead in the standings. With games home to long-time rivals James Bay this weekend, and a looming December 7th away game to the UVic Norseman, the VIRU Times Cup battle is heating up.
