The names of referees selected to be members of Rugby Canada’s 2014 National Panel of Referees has just been released. The names consist of 14 people (ten males and four females), four of whom are new members to this prestigious group of high performance athletes.

Nathan Abdlenour (ON/BC)
Bryan Arciero (NL/AB)
Chris Assmus (QC/BC)
David Crisp (AB)
Rose Labreche (ON)
Karen Lozada (ON)
Doug Hamre (AB)
Andrew Hosie (ON)
Michael Jones (PE/BC)
Andrew McMaster (ON)
Harry Mason (Asia RFU/BC)
Amy Murray (ON)
David Smortchevsky (BC)
Sherry Trumbull (BC)

The Panel has been expanded from 12 members in 2013 to 14 for the upcoming year. The expansion has been based upon the IRB appointments that have been deservedly gained by Sherry Trumbull, Chris Assmus and Bryan Arciero and the time commitment that these people have had to give to appointments beyond Canada. Similar appointments are anticipated in 2014 and the experiences of 2013 revealed that many of these IRB appointments clashed with Rugby Canada’s domestic schedule of national tournaments thus necessitating a growth in Panel member numbers.

The new Panel members include Amy Murray who is a member of the Toronto and District Referee Society and two Edmonton based referees; namely, David Crisp and Doug Hamre. In addition to these three people, Harry Mason will be a new face on this nation’s Panel. Harry is an internationally recognized referee who has gained many IRB appointments whilst he was based within the refereeing structure of the Asia Rugby Union (ARU). He has refereed at many IRB Sevens World Series tournaments and managed a number of internationals in Asia and the Pacific. Harry has now relocated to Vancouver. The remaining 10 people are all returning from last year.

Two long serving Panel members, Pat Allard and Derek Stoltz will not be continuing in 2014. Both Pat and Derek have been members of the National Panel for a number of years and both have gained experience at refereeing across most provinces in Canada as well as in international venues in France, Japan, the USA and a number of Caribbean nations. In both Derek and Pat’s case, changes in their professional career pathways and increasingly demanding career expectations along with new and additional family commitments has meant that they are both taking a new direction in their life after serving Rugby Canada in an admirable manner.

The first event in 2014 for the National Panel members is the upcoming Rugby Canada University Sevens in Langford, BC scheduled for March 7 and 8.
