VANCOUVER - British Columbia's under-18 men's provincial team bounced back from a day two defeat with a 36-10 victory over Newfoundland in their final pool game on Friday afternoon to qualify for the semifinals. The BC U18 women fell 27-0 and will advance as the second seed in their pool after going 2-1 in pool play.

BC's U16 men's teams battled each other in the opening round of Cup play with the BC-1s posting a 43-7 win. In the U16 women's competition, BC-1 were convincing winners with with a 29-5 win over Alberta to go 3-0 in pool play. They will face BC-2 in the semifinals after the seconds squad dropped their final match 31-3 to Ontario.

The U14 boys had another strong outing as the BC-1 side blanked Ontario-2 66-0 and the BC-2 side defeated Washington 28-15. The Barbarians, a mix of BC and Newfoundland reps, fell 53-5 to the top Ontario side in their division.

BC U18 36 - 10 Newfoundland
Defending national champs BC's U18 men's team bounced back from a day two defeat to go 2-1 in pool play. The 36-10 result over Newfoundland did not come easy as the Maritime standouts were fired up and scored the opening try.

BC answered back with two quick scores of their own through their backs as Tomasi Vataiki and Harjun Gill each went over. Guiseppe du Toit provided a conversion to make it 12-5. Newfoundland kept up their aggression and rolled a maul through their opposing 22 and eventually barrelled over for the score to close the gap to 12-10.

The physical encounter then took a turn as a red card was issued to a Newfoundland player while a BC forward was in the bin.

Play opened up and BC found their footing as Vataiki ran in another try just before half. A conversion by Du Toit put the hosts up 19-10.

"Newfoundland really have to be credited for their strong play and sense of passion," said BC assistant coach Rameses Langston. "They were a physical side and really put pressure on us."

The second half saw more fluid play from BC as they ran in three more tries through Vataiki, Luke Bradley and Foster Dewitt for a 36-10 score line.

"We know that we're still looking for our best performance as we are yet to reach our potential at this tournament. We'll now shift our attention to taking a step towards the semifinals," Langston added.

The BC squad will face no.3 seed Alberta on Saturday at 2:15pm. The two sides met previously on day one when the hosts recorded a 54-10 win.

BC U17 40 - 0 Saskatchewan
The TrueBlue U17 men's provincial team recorded their third straight win of 40 or more points on Friday morning, blanking Saskatchewan 40-0. North Vancouver's Nick Allen led the charge with three tries while Michael Henderson, Jackson Locker and Charlie Macdonald also went over to score. Captain Wes Wong notched two conversions and full back Jack Nyren provided three more.

"We had a good start which was important after coming out slow in our first two games," said Wong after the win. "Saskatchewan were a physical team and very skilled especially in the centres. We had a full team effort and are relying on the entire squad16-25 through the tournament. It's great to see the work paying off and the team getting the job done."
