VANCOUVER - Defending under-18 men's national champions British Columbia defeated Alberta 54-10 in the final match of a successful day one at the 2013 National Festival Championships in Vancouver on Wedneday. In a rematch of the 2012 national final, BC were convincing winners in an eight-try win.
The result saw BC junior rep teams post 10 wins with the only loss coming in an all-BC derby in the women's U16 division. BC-Gold blanked their fellow BC reps BC-Blue 60-0 in their opener. BC's U16 men's teams each went 2-0 and the U14 boys teams ended day one each with 1-0 records. The BC-2s were especially impressive, downing Ontario-1 in a narrow 10-5 win.
BC U18s defeat Alberta 54-10
In a rematch of last year's final, BC rallied after a slow first half to defeat their western rivals 54-10. BC's Karsten Leitner, Theo Sauder and Jason Hignell each crossed over for tries and with a pair of converts from Giuseppe du Toit were up 19-10 at the half.
Alberta were physical at the breakdown and gave the defending champs little room to run.
"It really took us 25 minutes to wake up and get the wheels turning. Alberta really came to play and although we knew they would, they still managed to outplay us in the first half," said BC head coach Jeff Williams. "The first half was about individuals and then in the second it was really a team effort."
Second half tallies came courtesy of a pair of tries from Thomas Choi and singles from Thomas Cheung, Spencer Gordon-Miller, and Captain Harjun Gill. Du Toit added a further five conversions for the win.
Up next the squad will face their historic rivals Ontario at 1:30pm.
BC U17s 45-3 Nova Scotia
The TrueBlue U17 men's provincial team were convincing winners in their 45-3 win over Nova Scotia. The home side found themselves down 3-0 early on but the opening match jitters soon subsided and they tallied seven unanswered tries. The scores came courtesy of Nick Allen, Phil Berna, Tyler Beselt, Nick Collett, Jack Nyren, Andrew O'Connor and Tim Stephens. Gavin Rowell kicked a penalty and conversion while Nyren added a pair of converts.
"We finished on a high when Jack Nyren went over for the last score and we'll now look to carry the momentum into tomorrow," said BC head coach Curry Hitchborn.
The U17s will now face New Brunswick Thursday morning in their second match of the competition.
BC U18 Women 53-5 Manitoba
British Columbia's U18 women's side ran in nine tries in their opening match against Manitoba to take a 53-5 win. Mackenzie Fowler, Alex Mueller and Tiffany Picketts each crossed over for a pair of tries with single tallies recorded by Allie White, Alexa Martin and Jade Elidoros. Alex Mueller kicked four conversions for the win. Next up for the U18 women is Nova Scotia with the two sides set to square off at 12:00pm on Thursday.
