VANCOUVER - BC Bears head coach Jim Dixon has released a 27-man player pool ahead of the program's August 10th Canadian Rugby Championship opener against the Prairie Wolf Pack.

The senior men's provincial program were in camp this past weekend at Capilano RFC's Klahanie Park and held a trial match on Sunday afternoon. Kicking off at 1:00pm with warm temperatures, Dixon was impressed by the level rugby on display and the overall conditioning of the players who have been out of (club) season since early May.

"The guys are looking very fit and we were pleased with what we saw especially since we kicked off in the middle of the day," Dixon said. "These past few weeks have been about giving the players the best opportunity to put their hands up  for selection to the squad and they have really demonstrated how strong they are as a group."

The 27-man short list has a mix of veterans and emerging national team talent including Canada under-20 captain Pat Kay of Duncan, BC.

"This is a very skillful group and they are very dynamic," added Dixon. "We've got a blend of pace and powerful athletes and I think we can play a number of different styles and will be able to adapt our game plan accordingly depending on our opponents."

The coaching staff have drawn on seven different Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League clubs as well as from the UBC Thunderbirds program.

Key players in the forwards include Micha Govorchin and Scott Plummer of Burnaby Lake Rugby Club. Meraloma back rower and Vancouver Wave captain Callum Morrison is also a standout in the pack.

The back line includes Canada-capped fly half Connor Braid of James Bay as well as Canada sevens capped speedster Sean Ferguson of UBC. Castaway Wanderers vets Matt Buckley and Jon Morris will also bolster the back line.

Dixon and his assistant Ken Goodland will be holding a final training session on Friday, August 2nd before announcing the match day 22 for the Wolf Pack fixture.
