VICTORIA, BC - The 2013 Canadian Rugby Championship is just over a month away and preparations for the BC Bears are well underway. Their August 10th fixture against the Prairie Wolf Pack is just around the corner and Bears head coach Jim Dixon recently held a full training session in Victoria for both Island and Mainland players.
"We have just completed our first squad camp this past weekend where we had two days together focusing on our fundamental game strategy, defence and set piece options," Dixon said. "It also gave us an opportunity to see all the players in a competitive match and gauge the conditioning of the players. The attitude of all involved was impressive and we certainly have some tough decisions to make over the coming weeks in regards to squad selection, a nice problem to have."
The team staff of Dixon, assistant coach Kenny Goodland and manger Hans De Goede have been hard at work behind the scenes as they prepare for the six week schedule. Their roster is set to feature a number of young Canadian national team hopefuls as well as some capped veterans who will be returning to the fold after a gruelling Pacific Nations Cup and international fixtures schedule.
"We are looking forward to welcoming back some of the Canadian squad members in a few weeks as they have been enjoying a much needed rest after a tough schedule of late. Their experience and leadership will add to an already strong group of players," Dixon added. "I think it's an exciting time for BC Rugby and we are all looking forward to that first tough game at UBC."
The preseason will continue with a camp in Vancouver and there will be a trial match the weekend prior to the first game of the CRC. The trial match is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of August 3-4th.
"We have some difficult decisions to make and we want to give the players every opportunity to put their hands up for selection," Dixon added.
The 2013 BC Bears have a five game schedule that gets underway with an August 10th opener against the Prairie Wolf Pack in Vancouver. BC will then host Ontario on August 30th and the Atlantic Rock on September 2nd before going on the road for their final two fixtures.
