Head Coach Sandro Fiorino and his coaching staff have announced the roster that will represent Canada at the Under 20 Nations Cup in London, England from July 8th-21st, 2013.
The roster features twenty-six players that were selected by Fiorino after a two-day camp in Toronto at Fletcher’s Field. Canada will be looking to improve upon their third place finish at the last edition of the tournament in 2011.
Fiorino was excited about the veterans returning to the team for this season. “Ashley Snider and Ashley Delany will anchor the front row with Cindy Nelles who is our biggest and strongest forward, dominant lineout jumper and a strong open field runner,” noted Fiorino.
He also spoke on returning player Charlie Moncon noting that she’ll make the move to hooker and will be able to have an impact with her physical play. Fiorino also touched on Sarah Gordon and her versatility to give Canada options at the scrum-half and fly-half positions.
In addition to the returning players, several players will be making their debut at the international level. He focused specifically on players Emily Belchos, Lori Josephson and Sara Kaljuvee who were all members of the Ontario Storm team that captured the 2012 National Women’s League Championship.
The team also features several standouts from Canadian Interuniversity Sport in every single conference. The prime standouts from Atlantic University Sport included three members of the 2012 CIS Champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women. Sara Kaljuvee, Danielle Robb and Natalie Lesco were all included on Fiorino’s 26 women roster.
In Quebec and Ontario, Frederique Rajotte from the RSEQ Champion Concordia Stingers and Nadia Popov from the OUA Finalists Queen’s Gaels in addition to several others will trade in their school’s colours for the red and white of the national team.
In the Canada West conference, Ashley Delaney and Sarah Gordon from the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in addition to Paige Farris from the CIS Bronze Medallist University of Alberta Pandas will represent the conference.
The players will spend time with their respective clubs until they reconvene in Toronto on June 30 for a six-day camp that will feature a match against the Ontario Storm Senior Women’s team. “With only a week’s time together in Toronto, the team will focus on putting in our game plans for defence and attack, noted Fiorino. From there, the team will travel to England for the tournament.
