SURREY, BC - The Cloverdale Rodeo 7s began as rugby often does in BC - a bit of rain and lots of passionate players and supporters. The skies opened up around mid-day and so did the throttle as the 7-a-side rust was shaken right off by the end of the pool stages of the tournament. A crowd of players and supporters numbering over 300 made their way to Sullivan Heights park and by all accounts truly enjoyed the day.
The tournament went extremely smoothly and culminated with a last-play-of-the game try by Rowing Club over 7s favourites Global Lighthouse in the men's competitive division. This game was a back and forth affair with many skilful runs and great tackling on both sides of the ball.
In fact this match was so close that only the referee had the final score tabulated correctly 35-33 - much to the chagrin of the gracious Global Lighthouse players and coaches who felt that all of their conversions were made.
Thanks to all volunteers, especially referees Chris Assmus, Nia Parsonage, Neil Grant and Toby Mustill. Your assistance and guidance on the pitch and on the discipline committee was much appreciated.
Congrats to the Surrey Beavers for putting together a fantastic day of rugby!!! They were well organized and welcoming hosts. The Beavers truly added some "Western Hospitality" to the tournament.
