VANCOUVER, BC - The Nanaimo Hornets will be looking to lift their second provincial title in three years on Saturday when they take on top-ranked Kamloops Rugby Club for the Big Kahuna Women's First Division provincial championship. The Hornets were Division Two champions in 2011 and have since marched their way through First Division opposition, earning a berth into Saturday's Karen Moore Cup Final at Stanley Park's Brockton Oval.

The third-seeded Hornets posted a 22-7 upset in the semifinals against no.2 Abbotsford, scoring four tries to clinch a berth into the cup final. With plenty of veteran leadership, Nanaimo will be looking to their senior players for experience on Saturday when they take on the undefeated Kamloops Raiders (6-0).

"One thing I can say about this squad is we have depth, not just in numbers, but in their ability to play a multitude of positions," said Nanaimo head coach Pamela Hadikin. "Our veterans have been outstanding. Our forwards are ball hungry demanding excellence in the scrums and lineouts and our backline has this connection that every coach hopes for - they have the attitude they need and the tenacity to make the plays work."

Nanaimo's backs include standouts Brenna Collicutt, Chloe Chapdelaine, Arlene McGuff and Charlotte Douglas. The veteran forwards include Kylie Turner, Angela Buick, Britta Paterson and Nancy Ellesmere.

Collicutt, McGuff, Turner and Paterson all featured for the Crimson Tide representative side during the 2013 Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup, where the Island finished as runner-ups.

In their previous matchup against Kamloops on March 16th, Nanaimo were narrowly beaten 29-25.

The Raiders boast a number of rep players including former BC-U23 provincial team captain Jesse Olynyk as well as speedster Erin Connelly-Reed. Kamloops were dominant in their semifinal win over Meraloma, recording five tries from their back line through no.11 Connelly-Reed, scrum half Kelsey Winter, oustide centre Emily Young (x2) and full back Danielly Plysiuk. Fly half Jess Oldenburger added three conversions to see the Raiders down Meraloma 31-5.

"With a tough loss to Kamloops early on, it was an opportunity to see how much the ladies expected from themselves and whether or not they wanted to be in the finals," Hadikin added. "[This Saturday] I expect Kamloops to not give up at any point in the game, to take the ball at pace and fight to keep it. I believe every restart to the game will be a battle and we wouldn't have it any other way for a final."
