Qualification for BC Rugby High School Provincial Sevens underway this week

VANCOUVER - The road to the 2013 BC Rugby High School Provincial Sevens championships gets underway this week with qualifying tournaments being staged in Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria, Cowichan and Abbotsford.

For the BC High School Boys (BC Secondary Schools Rugby Union), both the Vancouver and Kelowna events will kick off the sevens season on Friday, April 12th, hosting their qualifiers at St. George's School and Kelowna Secondary, respectively. Sunday, April 14th will feature the Vancouver Island Sevens at UVic's Centennial Stadium. The fourth and final qualifier will be held at Abbotsford's Yale Secondary on Friday, April 19th, featuring teams from across the Fraser Valley.

For the BC High School Girls competition, seedings have already been confirmed for Vancouver (Carson Graham and Lord Byng), the Cariboo (William's Lake) and the NorthWest Regions (Houston Secondary). Fraser Valley's seeds will be awarded through invitation while qualifiers are still being confirmed for the Okanagan region. A Vancouver Island qualifier will be held at Cowichan Secondary School this Saturday, April 13th. 

The 2012 BC High School Girls Sevens featured 16 teams with Abbotsford Collegiate eventually taking the Cup title after an undefeated run through the tournament. Plate winners Robert Bateman and Bowl winners Elgin Park were also from the Fraser Valley region with Kelowna's Mt. Boucherie taking the Shield at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium.

Two-time defending Boy's provincial sevens champions Shawnigan Lake School will be competing at this weekend's Vancouver Island qualifier as they look to punch their tickets to provincials.

For the first time ever, both the Boys and Girls provincial sevens tournaments will be hosted at UBC together over the April 26-28 weekend. The competition will feature 16 boys and 16 girls teams competing in pools of four. Similar to last year's girls' event, a Cup (first place), Plate (fifth), Bowl (ninth) and Shield (13th) will be awarded ensuring teams will be play a minimum of five games over the two-day festival.

The Girls High School Sevens will be hosted Friday, April 26th through Saturday, April 27th. The tournament kicks off on the Friday at 12:00pm and wraps the following day with the Cup Final at 4:20pm.

The Boys opening day of competition kicks off at 11:00am and will overlap with the girls finals day on Saturday, April 27th. Day two action will wrap on Sunday, April 28th with the Cup Final at 4:30pm.
