VANCOUVER - Preparations for the 2013 National Women's League Finals (June 27-30 at UBC) kicked off this past weekend with BC Rugby holding their first open camp for the senior and under-20 women's provincial programs in Vancouver.
A total of 55 athletes were in attendance with a further 37 unable to attend due to school commitments, injuries or currently living out of province.
The camp was organized by Provincial Coach and Development Manager Dave Brown in consultation with BC Senior Women's Coach Pat Fleck and former NSWT Coach and current BC Regional Coach Kris de Scossa.
"The structure of the camp allowed all the coaches to observe and evaluate players in a number of situations, using current Rugby Canada best-practice protocols for core skill evaluation," said Brown. "Players were given the opportunity to put much of the practical sessions into a structured opposed game environment in the final session when they were divided into four teams and worked on both the offensive and defensive side of their games."
Staff at the camp included BC U20 Coaches Steph Murphy and April Quinto, former National Team Coach and Tide Senior Women's Coach Brad Skene, former BC Senior Women's Coach and current Wave Senior Women's Coach Walt Brandl, Wave Assistant Coach and former NSWT Member Mario Gallo and Fraser Valley U18 Women's Coach and former NSWT Member Jen Ross.
The camp schedule included 40 and 1600 metre time trials, handling and tackling evaluations as well as sessions on phase play and team play.
The next camp will be held after the Easter weekend, following a debrief and the opportunity to forward feedback to the players.
The camps are in preparation for the 2013 National Women's League (NWL) Finals scheduled for June 27-30th at UBC. For more information about the women's provincial team programs, please contact Dave Brown at email@example.com
