U18 BC Elite Youth 7s with Team Canada
CAUSEWAY BAY, HONG KONG - Day Two updates from BC Elite Youth 7s Manager Doug Tate...
We had a good day today and saw Canada scrimmage with England as well as took part in a clinic with the Penguins at King George V School. The team has been getting ready for tomorrow's tournament and today was good for the preparations.
The humidity has jumped up and this will be a good experience for the players. The team got to see a lot of the best players, both past and present at the HK 10's tournament (pictures to follow). So far our preparations are a lot about adapting to the climate, recovery, dealing with jet lag and getting around Hong Kong.
Cheers, Doug Tate
CAUSEWAY BAY, HONG KONG - The BC Elite Youth Sevens U18 team arrived in Hong Kong on Monday ahead of the HK International Youth Sevens tournament set for Thursday, March 21st.
After 14+ hours of travel (enough to watch 6 or so movies) the team collected their bags and picked up tickets to the iRB Sevens tournament before taking a 25-minute train ride to down town.
Updates from head coach Shane Thompson…
It's pretty interesting to see the look on the guys faces when they walk out of the subway into downtown HK with all it's people, lights and unique odours. This is certainly an eye opener for the BCEY7s team.
We woke up and walked to a local basketball court and had our first practice session. There are not really any fields available so this is next best alternative. Considering the travel day was the night before the guys had a very good session. Lots of excitement within the group!
Then we went back to hostel and had a few hours of down time and then walked to the HK stadium practice field to watch Canada play Scotland. This was great for the guys to see Canada practice and play. It was a fantastic opportunity to see two international teams warming up, doing skills work, preparing for a game and then the scrimmage. Plus we were able to see and have a quick chat with [BCEY7's grad] Justin Douglas.
After the Canada scrimmage we walked to the subway station and went over to the mainland and walked to King's Park to scrimmage with the HK academy. Unfortunately when we arrived, HK was hit with a lightning and rain storm. The amount of rain , thunder and lightning was crazy.
Despite this the guys were excited to play especially after seeing Canada play. But the lightning and heavy rains didn't go away and the HK rugby union cancelled the session do to weather. A disappointment for all but although the game was cancelled the HK academy hosted us in a post match meal. At Kings Park the BCEY7s boys also had an opportunity to meet Serevi.
After dinner we walked, took the subway and walked some more back to Hotel in Causeway bay. This was a long day for the group who are certainly showing signs of jet lag.
Watch some HK 10'S
Watch Canada scrimmage England
Session with Penguins coaches.
More walking and subway :)
