ABBOTSFORD - Vancouver Island's U20 men's team closed out their 2013 Dunbar Keg series with a convincing 47-12 victory over Fraser Valley on Saturday at Exhibition Park. The team rebounded from a narrow seven point loss in week one to Vancouver and now sit with a 1-1 record.
"It was a big improvement from last week," said Island U20 scrum half James Pitblado. "At training we wanted to establish more of an up-tempo game plan which worked in the second half against Vancouver. Today we totally executed and put up a bunch of points."
Fraser Valley scored the first and last tries of the game, but their porous defence struggled against the tenacity and speed of the Island U20 roster.
First half scores for the Island U20s included Crosby Stewart (James Bay), Jon Lorimer (Uvic Vikes), Fergus Hall (UVic Vikes), Jeff Nishima-Miller (Uvic Vikes) and Brandon Harrison (James Bay). The second half was a similar story as Harrison and Hall each recorded their second tries and Robbie Anderson (UVic Vikes) and Hunter Lloyd (UVic Vikes) each went over. Hall struggled from the tee and went 1-for-8 in conversion attempts, with Pitblado going 0-1.
Fraser Valley scores came courtesy of Iliesa Draunimasi in the 2nd minute and Dan Lee in the 80th. Connor Hunter kicked the Valley's only conversion to round out the scoring.
"Last week we were a bit too loose [against Vancouver] and I thought for a second when they scored that we might be in a similar situation," said Tide U20 coach Winston Stanley. "But you could see that our guys refocused and really began to pick and go."
Up next the Fraser Valley head to Stanley Park's Brockton Oval to scrum down against Vancouver on February 16th.
