Rugby Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Sandro Fiorino as Head Coach of the Women's U20 National Team. Sandro brings a wealth of experience to the program through his previous involvement working with age grade athletes through to provincial senior women and most recently coaching with the National women's 15s and 7s programs.
He is passionate about Canadian Rugby and is capable of developing the skills and performance of the age-grade athletes necessary to excel at the 2013 Nations Cup. In addition, his proficiency in talent development will be looked upon highly as he works with the next generation of talented athletes looking to make the jump to the national team in the next few years.
As a Level 3 NCCP coach he has numerous accolades illustrating his strength as a coach and leader. He began his coaching experience, beyond the club level, in 2005 as assistant coach with the Senior Ontario women. In 2007 he was named the head coach of the U19 Ontario team and the following year was quickly promoted to head coach of the Senior Ontario women's program, holding that role for the next 5 seasons from 2008-2011.
Sandro also excelled at the University level coaching the varsity women's program at McMaster University from 2006-2010. In his first season he helped the team to a 6-0 regular season after an 0-6 season the previous year. Under Fiorino's guidance the team made it to the playoffs each of his five seasons. Sandro was also honoured with the OUA coach of the year three times in 2007, 2009, and 2010, a testament to his coaching abilities. This leadership helped propel Sandro into his first international role as head coach of the Sevens Men's Rugby Team for the World University Games (FISU) in both 2008 (Shield Winner) and 2010 (Plate Finalists). Thus setting the stage for a role with Rugby Canada and their National Women's Program.
Within Rugby Canada Sandro began his coaching career in 2006 as a guest coach with the U19 Women's Team. In 2007 and 2008 he also had the opportunity to guest coach with both the Men's 7s and Women's Sevens National programs. His experience and decorum was evident as he was tapped to join John Tait's staff with the National Women's program in 2011.
Since joining the program he has contributed to many successful performances including team victories in Las Vegas 2011, Hong Kong 2011, Dubai 2011 and Las Vegas 2012. Sandro was also with the 15s program for their 2011 Nations Cup and was the Head Coach for NACRA victories in 2011 and the most recent win by the Maple Leafs in Dubai just one week ago.
His experience and passion for the development of the game are unmatched and he is a great fit for coaching the U20's as he excels in talent identification and player development.
He is very excited about the role and has already been through an in depth process scouring the country for top talent; "With the help of John Tait, we have been identifying players at this years National Women's League, National Festival and the recent CIS season. Over 150 players have been tested and trialed from the Atlantic region, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and British Columbia. I'm excited to announce the U20 Long List later this month as these players will be working hard over the next 6 months to secure the 26 spots on this team."
With only 7 months until the 2013 Nations Cup in England, Sandro is well on his way to making another significant contribution to the National Program and the sport in Canada. Rugby Canada is excited about the appointment and looking forward to seeing the results of his hard work and the talent developed in World Cups to come.
