VICTORIA - One of Canada’s oldest sports trophies, the McKechnie Cup, will once again be played for this season after sitting dormant since the demise of the Rugby Canada Super League.

The Crimson Tide will play games against Vancouver on Saturday, January 26th at Westhills Stadium in Langford and against the Fraser Valley on Saturday, February 2nd in Langley. At the same venues on the same day, there will be corresponding games for the women in the Hellerud-Brown Cup and for the U-20 men for the Dunbar Keg, the Rising Tide being the present holders of that trophy.

Coaching and management teams have now been established for the three Vancouver Island teams.

For the Crimson Tide, the head coach will be Ken Goodland of Castaway-Wanderers, assisted by Roger Robinson of the same club, two highly experienced coaches and players and successful coaches of the 2011 Dunbar Keg champions of 2011. Managing the Crimson Tide will be Hans de Goede of James Bay Athletic Association, one of Canada’s most outstanding players of all time.

For the Women’s Tide, the head coach is Brad Skene of Cowichan RFC, very experienced in coaching women’s rugby at many levels and in recent seasons prior to the current one, coach of the UVic Vikes women’s team. He will be assisted by Anna Schnell, former national team player and current BC Rugby Union board member. Managing the women’s team will be Aimee Burley of Comox RFC, Vice-President for Women’s Rugby in the Vancouver Island Rugby Union.

Head coach of the U-20 Rising Tide will be the many times-capped Canadian international, Winston Stanley, assisted by another former national team player, Pat Dunkley of James Bay A.A. The Rising Tide will be managed by John Lyall of Velox, the present VP for Senior Men’s Rugby for the VIRU.

A prime mission for these competitions is to make B.C. athletes who are not already performing internationally known to National Team selectors.  The coaches are confident they can put teams on the field that are more than capable of maintaining the proud traditions of Tide teams of the past.

The three matches on January 26th are being held at Westhills Stadium.  The modest charge of $ 10 will admit fans to all 3 games, the women’s game kicking off at 11:30 am, the U-20 at 1:15 pm and the Senior Men at 3:00 pm.

It is the wish of the Crimson Tide committee that both players and fans will give their strong support to the return of this historic competition.
