ABBOTSFORD - Team Captain Tiffany Picketts closed out her age grade club career with an all-star performance on Sunday morning, lifting Abbotsford's women's U18 team to a provincial title with a 29-5 win over Fraser Valley rivals Bayside Athletic Assocation. Picketts recorded a game-high 12 points through two tries and a conversion.
Abby try scorers also included Nakisa Levale and Sophia DiGianni. Luaren Kerr recorded a try and a convert for seven points.
"We put in an absolutely thorough performance and I am so proud of all our girls. They responded to the roles and tasks they were given and maintained a great work rate for the entire 60 minutes," said Abbotsford coach Jen Ross. "The quality of the match was a testament to the commitment that young women across the province are giving to the game."
When the two sides clashed back on October 28th, Bayside eked out a 27-20 win after scoring in the final minutes to hand Abbotsford their only loss of the season. These two sides were also in the 2011 provincial final where Abbotsford were 34-7 victors.
"Going into the game we knew that defence was going to be the key. We wanted to apply pressure and try to contest every ball whether on the ground or in the air," said Ross. " Even without Jade and Jenna Elidoros and Alex Mueller, Bayside are an extremely talented group of athletes and we knew we would have to play our best to win."
"We had many strong performances today from not only our starters but from the girls coming off the bench as well," Ross added. "Girls from nine different schools across Abbotsford and Langley make up this team ranging from Grades 8 to 12."
