VANCOUVER - Vancouver Rowing Club's U17 Captain Phillip Berna is this week's BC Rugby Junior MVP. A ruthless defender and a key part of the Rowers' offence, Berna was nominated for his outstanding performance this past weekend against Bayside.

Name: Phillip Berna
Club: Vancouver Rowing Club
Division: Men's U17 Lower Mainland (16 years old)
Number of years played rugby: 6 years

"A fast and versatile flanker, Phil has made a huge number of tackles, carried the ball well on attack and has aggressively chased and won many kickoffs," said U17 Rowers Manager Pat O'Gorman. "His skill as a lineout jumper and courage to commit to loose ball in tight situations has won him much praise."

Phil leads by example both in practice and on the pitch and according to O'Gorman, has a lethal side step.

"Phil works hard at training and comes well prepared mentally for games, and as our Captain for several matches, has had a strong leadership role on the team," O'Gorman added. "Phil has consistently been our best player this year and has excelled both on attack and defence."

Honourable mention goes to Phil's teammate Brian park, who produced some crunching tackles in last weekend's match - making a nomination of MVP very difficult for the Rowers coaching staff.

Up next, Phillip will lead his team down to South Surrey Athletic Park this Sunday, November 11th for a semi-final matchup with league leaders Bayside. Kickoff is set for 1:30pm at the Shark Tank.

October - Brandon Schellenberger (Castaway Wanderers RFC), Adam Martin (Capilano RFC), Taitusi Vikilani (Burnaby Lake RC)
