Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team were handed their third loss of the season on Nov. 3 as they fell 30-26 to Oak Bay competition, the Castaway Wanderers. The UVic men now post a league record of 3-3 with 15 points, one point ahead of crosstown rivals James Bay Athletic Association.
FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER
It was a messy few opening minutes as both teams struggled to find their footing. However, the Vikes appeared to get a handle on the visiting Wanderers as they had the run of the play for the last three quarters of the half.
The Vikes were first on the board after a successful penalty kick by sevens international Nathan Hirayama. A drop goal several minutes later, again by Hirayama, saw the UVic men go up by another two points to make it 5-0 for the home side.
The Vikes scored the first try of the game after a scrum in their own end saw the backs move the ball wide and winger Beau Parker (Vancouver, BC) carried the ball down to the Wanderers’ 5-metre line. Cam Polson (Victoria, BC) then took the ball across the goal line for the unconverted try.
Another try, this time from Parker, saw the Vikes go up another five points on the board but in the dying minutes of the first half the Wanderers bounced back and scored a quick eight points with a try and penalty. Going into halftime the Vikes were able to maintain their lead and were up by eight with a score of 16-8.
The Wanderers crossed the line early in the second half and the Vikes found themselves on the defense. Another penalty kicked by Hirayama gave the Vikes three more points while a try by Sean Duke (Vancouver, BC) was converted by Hirayama for another two. The Wanderers kept themselves in the lead and the game ended with a score of 26-30 for the visiting Oak Bay side.
“We lost opportunities on poor handling,” said Vikes flyhalf Hirayama. “We turned the ball over too many times at key moments.”
The University of Victoria Vikes play again in two weeks against James Bay Athletic Association, Nov. 24, 2:45 p.m. at Wallace Field.
