The weekend of October 5-7 marked the 35th annual Gobbler Rugbyfest in Abbotsford. 12 men's teams and 5 women's teams took to the fields at Exhibition Park under brilliant blue skies in some of the warmest Gobbler weather on record. The weekend started with a well-attended welcome party on Friday, with more than 120 people in attendance to reopen the club after significant renovations. Games began Saturday at 10am with some fairly competitive rugby. The men played 15 aside while the ladies were 10 aside. Saturday night was the Gobbler dance, which was sold out again. This years theme of 'Blast to the Past' produced some entertaining costumes, including some greasy mullets and the comeback of many 80's wrestlers.
Games continued Sunday with the last round of pool play and then playoffs. On the men's side, Bateman Alumni, Edson, and William's Lake/Yale Alumni were all top in their respective pools, while Abby Alumni, UNBC, Flatwack, and Edmonton Clan all vied for the final playoff spot in points for and against. In the end, Abby teamed up with the Clan to play Bateman in one semi-final while William's Yale took on Edson in the other semi. Bateman played Edson in an entertaining final and won 5 tries to 2. The Clan defeated William's Lake in a boat race to claim 3rd. On the women's side, the local Abby women edged Leduc in the final to win the tournament while United beat the SFU Vixens to secure 3rd.
The Abbotsford Rugby Club would like to thank all the teams who attended the 2012 Gobbler, particularly those who travelled from long distances to join us. We'd also like to thank all the volunteers and patrons who helped make the event a great success. We hope to see everyone back next year for the 36th annual Gobbler!
