Head Coach of the BC Elite Youth Sevens program Shane Thompson has released dates for upcoming trials where he will be identifying the next generation of future olympians. Thompson will be making selections for teams being entered into potential tournaments in New York (November), Las Vegas (February), Hong Kong (March) and Victoria (July). To be eligible for selection, players must attend at least one session and are invited to attend more if possible.
During the 2011-12 season, Thompson's U18 teams went undefeated at all three international events they entered. At the U17 age grade, the provincial sevens program won the Vegas High School Invitational, took the Bowl at the Victoria International Sevens and participated in the Northern California Youth Sevens championships while on tour with BC's U17 provincial team in San Francisco. This past summer also featured an unprecedented number of sevens tournaments for the U14 boy's age grade with competitions held in Burnaby, Victoria and Surrey (BC Summer Games).
"Athletes across the province are having amazing experiences playing sevens both on and off the field," said Thompson. "Our athletes are getting more time playing sevens in camps, trials and tournaments and I can see the level improving at all age grades."
"In a lot of ways our trips are mimicking the national team in the way players are exposed to travel, jet lag, experiencing different cultures and eating different foods," Thompson added.
Thompson's next wave of trials and ID sessions kick off on September 26th at Shawnigan Lake School, with sessions also scheduled for Nanaimo, Vancouver and White Rock. Please note these trials are for selection purposes and are not meant to be introductory clinics for sevens rugby. The sessions are meant for experienced rugby players looking to play representative rugby.

About the BCEY7s program As a result of rugby sevens being included into the Olympic games for 2016 & 2020, the British Columbia Rugby Union has developed the Elite Youth Sevens program. The sevens academy program is designed to help develop young athletes into the rugby players who will be best qualified to represent Canada with distinction at future Olympic Games and Rugby World Cup tournaments. The program is geared towards identifying, training and developing athletes who can go on to represent their Regions, their Province and Canada at Age Grade Level and beyond.
