EDMONTON - British Columbia has opened their U19 Canadian Rugby Championship campaign with a convincing 41-17 win over the Voyageurs, a regional side made up of Eastern Ontario and Quebec representatives.
The Voyageurs jumped out to an early lead but BC found their footing scoring two quick tries just before half time to take a comfortable 34-14 lead.
By the final whistle BC had tries from Christian Styles, Kieran Mcauley, Brian Murphy, Jared Curry, Pete Chauvel and Patrick Kay. Connor Hunter kicked four conversions and a penalty to finish with 11 points.
"The players performed well in their first game as a squad," said BC head coach Kris de Scossa. "All of our players contributed to the result and in particular Jordan Harvey, Brian Murphy, Mike O'Toole and Charlie Thorpe had strong games."
On Friday BC will look to keep their momentum going against the Atlantic, with kickoff set for 3:00pm at Nor'Westers Athletic Association Fields. The Atlantic suffered a 45-24 opening day loss to the Voyageurs on Wednesday.
"Following a solid performance the players are in a calmly positive mood. The next challenge is the Atlantic which will be a formidable task with the East coasters playing some abrasive and aggressive rugby," De Scossa added.
