VANCOUVER – The British Columbia Rugby Union is proud to announce a new three-year partnership that will see B2GOLD Corp. named as the title sponsor of the 'B2GOLD Provincial Regional Championships'. Additionally, a new fund to support representative youth rugby in British Columbia has been established by the founder and CEO of B2Gold, Clive Johnson.
The newly coined 'B2GOLD PRCs' is an annual competition held in Vancouver where age grade players are introduced to representative level rugby. The three day tournament features approximately 500 athletes from across the province and is a pivotal step in the player pathway for athletes to put their hands up for selection to BC provincial teams competing at national competitions. The B2Gold sponsorship will enhance the athlete experience and provide a platform for growth at the representative level.
For those B2Gold PRC athletes who gain further representative honours with BC Rugby’s provincial teams, there are additional costs including training, travel, room and board. It is a stated objective of BC Rugby to best ensure it does not become cost prohibitive for an athlete to continue on their long-term athlete development pathway; a goal shared by Clive Johnson. As a result, the ‘Clive Johnson BC Rugby Fund' has been created through the Vancouver Foundation.
“BC Rugby has held a fund with the Vancouver Foundation for 23 years,” explained Jeff Sauvé, CEO of BC Rugby. “Clive has matched those funds and agreed to assist in marketing the benefits of an annuity that provides financial assistance to athletes representing British Columbia, with a specific focus on helping those who may not otherwise have the funds to compete.”
“The idea is to have more youth players involved at the representative level and to provide financial support to facilitate growth,” said Clive Johnson, CEO of B2Gold. “The British Columbia Rugby Union has done a great job of promoting and growing the sport. I am proud of the opportunity to be involved and to give back to the rugby world.”
