OLD PUGET SOUND BEACH
The OPSB as they are commonly known is based out of Seattle, Washington. They will be visiting the shores of Burnaby Lake for the first time this Saturday. This is a Club loaded with 7’s talent, in fact so loaded that they have decided to come with two Elite Men’s Teams and a Women’s Team. They are the 2012 USA Rugby Super League Western Conference Champions, 5 time USA National Sevens Champions, last won the title in 2010 and is coached by Evan Haigh and Fijian Sevens legend Waisale Serevi.
They also have some very experienced 7’s players who are either currently playing or have played for the US National 7’s Team. Add to that livewire former Fiji 7’s Rep Emosi Vucago at scrumhalf and you have a very lethal Team to face! Here’s what they have in their arsenal:
USA Players of note
Mike Palefau (USA Sevens and 15's player)
Miles Craigwell (USA Sevens Player, former Miami Dolphin NFL)
Pate Tuilevaka (USA 15's and Sevens Player)
Trevor Richards (USA Sevens Player)
Fijian Players of note include
Emosi Vucago (Fijian Legend, former captain of Fiji in both 7s and 15s)
William Rasileka (Fijian Sevens Player)
Filimoni Botitu (Fijian Sevens Player)
Yikes!!
Tournament Manager, Roko Kapaiwai is looking at this and is thinking, “The Lighthouse” might actually be hauled down the I-5 this weekend.
Nick Waggott of the Youngbucks might be looking at this from a totally different mindset.
“Bring It On” may not only be on his mind, it may also be on the mind of Joe Dolesau, defending Champ BLRC Lighthouse Captain and on the minds of the Lomas, Abbotsford and Bayside captains as well.
Roko is just salivating at the thought of watching some top level 7’s Rugby on the weekend.
“I had heard that Emosi Vucago was in Seattle but I didn’t know that he was actually with OPSB. This just brings the level and quality of rugby this weekend at the Lake to a whole new level”.
We will finally have some good weather this weekend so this is something you need to put on your calendar.
OPSB’s first game is at 10.25 on Field Two, against another ‘Islander’ loaded Team, the South Seas Connections. This will be like Zeus and Hades duking it out. A meeting with epic proportion and sure to be a thrill to watch.
Come on down to Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and make it a Day of Rugby…..bring some suntan lotion as well
First game is at 9.30
