Published Friday, June 1, 2012

VANCOUVER - As announced earlier in May, BC Rugby and TrueBlue® Blueberry Juice have partnered to expand opportunities for Under-15 and Under-17 Provincial programs, and today program details are released.

A TrueBlue BC Rugby Under-17 men’s provincial team will host a tour-in as well as tour to California. In addition, competition will be provided for a TrueBlue BC Rugby Under-15 Boy’s squad.  With the creation of these programs, and for the first time in BC Rugby’s 123 year history, boy’s / men’s provincial age grade teams will be operational at every age from Under-14 to Under-19.

Much of the U17 activity for 2012 is centred on a partnership with the Northern California Youth Rugby Association (NCYRA).  A perennial powerhouse at all USA Rugby National Youth Championship events; NCYRA is comprised of more than 90 Clubs, 200 Teams, 4,000 players (both boys and girls), all playing in 13 Youth Divisions.

A three game series will be contested between BC U17 and NCYRA Varsity (consisting of players under the age of 18).  The BC squad will be selected from current BC Rugby Academy players who are identified by Regional Coaches.  The squad will compete in two domestic fixtures, followed by a game in San Francisco.  The winner of the series will earn the right to hoist the inaugural TrueBlue BC NorCal Cup.  While on tour in California, the U17s will also enter multiple teams in the NCYRA Sevens Championship Tournament.

Updated Schedule:
Game 1: BC U17 vs. NCYRA Varsity  – 6:00PM on Tuesday, June 19 (Brockton Oval, Vancouver BC)

Game 2: BC U17 vs. NCYRA Varsity Game 2 – 5:30PM on Thursday, June 21 (UVIC, Victoria BC)

Game 3: BC U17 vs. NCYRA Varsity Game 3 – KO TBC on Friday, July 27 (San Francisco Gold Gate Rugby Club, Treasure Island CA)

BC U17 teams in the NCYRA Sevens Championship Tournament – Sunday, July 29 (Northwest Park, Dixon CA)

U17 Coaching Team: Dave Brown, Jason Young, Pat Fleck

TrueBlue BC Rugby Under-15 Provincial Team

As a result of the capacity established through the Under-14 Provincial program, a youth elite player base exists for both a BC Island and BC Mainland U15.  Each team will take on NCYRA’s Junior Varsity team (those players under the age of 16 years) as a curtain raiser to the U17 fixtures in Vancouver and Victoria.  Sessions to select the teams will be held leading up to the two fixtures.

In addition to drawing from the previous year’s Under-14 Provincial teams, it is anticipated the U15 squads will also feature 14 year olds looking to make their regional squads in this summer’s Under-16 Division at the Provincial Regional Championship.

Game 1: BC U15 vs. NCYRA Junior Varsity  – 4:30PM on Tuesday, June 19 (Brockton Oval, Vancouver, BC)

Game 2: BC U15 vs. NCYRA Junior Varsity  – 4:00PM on Thursday, June 21 (SMUS or UVIC, Victoria, BC)

For the Lower Mainland U15s there will be a trial on Saturday June 9th at Brockton Oval (Stanley Park) from 1-3:30pm. For more information contact Don Brown at rugby@eastlink.ca

U15 Coaching Team: Ian Hyde-Lay, Mike Stiles, Daniel Weidner
