Lower Mainland Senior Women's playoffs kick off this Saturday
Vancouver, BC: The reigning Senior Women's provincial rugby champions Burnaby Lake Rugby Club will look to add another trophy to their 2011 haul when they host SFU in the semifinals of the Lower Mainland Tier One playoffs. A win this Saturday could see top-seeded Burnaby Lake clinch home field advantage for the championship final slated for November 26th.
Burnaby lifted the provincial championship Harris Memorial Cup last May and this summer cruised through the BC Sevens Series en route to their second straight Series championship. Carrying their form into the Fall 2011 Lower Mainland season, Burnaby went undefeated (7-0) to clinch the top seed.
Led by Canadian international Julia Sugawara (64 pts), Burnaby finished second in overall scoring averaging 34.7 points per game and led the division defensively, allowing just 7.86 ppg against. Burnaby's semifinal opponent is SFU, a team they defeated 41-0 back on October 1st during the regular season. SFU finished fourth overall with a 3-4 record, led by the team's top scorer Erin Grant. Notching five tries and kicking eight conversions this Fall, Grant finishing sixth overall in the league scoring race with 41 points.
Across town at Hume Park (New Westminster), the Bayside Sharks and United RFC will also be battling for a berth to the Tier One championship game. The Lower Mainland Senior Women's finals will are slated for November 26th, at a location determined by this weekend's results.
