Rugby Canada is pleased to announce Langford, British Columbia as the host for the 2012 National Invitational University Sevens Championships being held on March 2nd and 3rd, 2012.
The 2011 Championships saw 8 men’s teams from across the country battle for supremacy and the National title. In the end the University of Victoria beat the University of Western Ontario 34-17 to claim the Cup Championship and top spot in men’s university sevens rugby. The University of British Columbia captured the Plate Championship, while the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University took home the Bowl and Shield Championships respectively.
Rugby Canada is excited about the addition of a women’s division in the 2012 tournament.
“It is a great opportunity for players to showcase their abilities and hone their skills in a sevens environment,” says Les Gilson, Rugby Canada’ s Senior Manager of High Performance, “I know [the coaching staff and selectors] will be watching closely in Langford this March.”
With the inclusion of women in the 2012 tournament Rugby Canada is looking to secure Rugby Sevens a future spot in the CIS family.
The Rio 2016 Olympics is on the horizon and it is more important than ever to ensure our young athletes are continuing to develop their skills and stay involved with Rugby Sevens. Rugby Canada’s National Team scouts will be on hand at this tournament as Canadian Universities’ best men and women engage in an exciting rugby sevens battle at City Centre Park’s Bear Mountain Stadium. The outstanding play by Harry Jones (UBC) and Sean Ferguson (UBC) in the 2011 tournament caught the eye of Canada’s National Team selectors and earned both athletes a spot on the National Men’s Sevens squad that attended the 2011 HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The 2012 National Invitational University Sevens Championships promises to be an action packed two day event, filled with fast paced hard hitting rugby sevens. Come out and see the Nation's best, cheer on your team and join in the excitement!
