It’s Friday afternoon….
The Fields are ready, the weather is supposed to be sunny, all the preparations are complete, no more practice, the draws are done, and it is time to get on the field and play rugby! Sevens Rugby to be exact….
Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is eagerly awaiting the arrival of teams to their Second Annual BLRC Lighthouse 7’s Tournament set for Saturday, on the shores of Burnaby Lake. The City came by yesterday and trimmed the grass a bit on the Field and it looks awesome!
A total of 26 Teams will now get to play on these nicely trimmed lawn and there could be some surprises in the results as well. South Seas Connection, from Victoria, look to be the team to beat. But Burnaby Lake are the defending Elite Men Champions and they are not going to be giving it up so easily. Abbotsford is the underdog here and judging by their performance in recent tournaments, they may surprise a few people on Saturday.
Meraloma's Elite Women played Burnaby Lake in the Finals of the Abbotsford Rugby Sevens tournament and scored right off the opening kickoff. No team had done that to the Lighthouse Women in three years. The ladies from the LomaDome are on their way to the Lake and this can be very interesting come the end of the day.
The Burnaby Mountain ladies, they of the SFU Club, have a few tricks up their sleeves to change the way the Rugby ball bounces on Saturday and haul the Hardware up the Hill, away from the Lake.
The Socials Division is a Battle Field on its own! Fourteen Teams… a mix bag of tricks, a mix bag of Teams and a bagful of Rugby fun. The battle will be fast and furious throughout the day. Chilliwack, Rowers, Brit Lions, Velox may claim to be the frontrunners, but Mulgrave Alumni and Northwest Trees, our visitor from the States, could prove Giant Killers in this Division, simply because we do not know their strength.
We have six Teams competing in the Age Grade Division as we prepare these young guns for the Olympics in 2016.
Shane Thompson will be bringing his U16 squad to the tournament as they prepare for the upcoming games.
We’re starting the tournament off with the Socials and the Juniors at nine. The drum roll does not stop until the Finals around 5pm. It promises to be a fun filled Rugby Saturday with players showing off their skills and talent hoping to take home the hardware.
