Vancouver, BC: Day one of the Under-14 Boys National Provincial Festival opened with both British Columbian squads going 1-1. The Ontario 'Red' squad was the only team to finish the first round undefeated, posting a 2-0 record.
Featuring teams from British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta, this is the first time the tournament has been hosted in the province since 2008. Each team played two games of 13-a-side rugby on Wednesday and are set to play their remaining round-robin matches on Thursday at UBC's Wolfson Fields.
The British Columbia-1 squad, aka BC 'Growl', narrowly lost to table leaders Ontario Red 26-19 to open the tournament. The BC Growl came out firing in their second game, downing the BC Roar (BC-2) squad 48-15 to finish the day second in the overall standings.
The BC Roar wrapped up the day with a narrow 17-10 win over Ontario Blue, to finish in fourth place in the standings. The Ontario Blue squad placed third due to point differential but are tied in bonus points and overall points with BC Roar.
Alberta lost their opening game by a tight three point margin, falling 15-12 to Ontario Blue. Their final match of the day saw them go against a tough Ontario Red squad, that ran out 47-5 winners.
Day two of the Festival kicks off with BC Roar taking on Ontario Red at 10:00am. BC Growl are slated to play Ontario Blue at 10:45am.
