The
Burnaby Lake Rugby Clubs is getting ready for an onslaught of both players and fans
coming to the second Annual Burnaby Lake Lighthouse 7’s tournament this Saturday,
August 6th, at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
A total
of 33 teams will be playing in the tournament and will include six Age Grade
Teams, as the Club continues to promote Sevens Rugby to kids in preparation for
the games entry into the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Tournament Manager, Roko Kapaiwai is scratching his head trying to
figure out how to fit all these games into one day.
“There are close to fifty games to play in
one day and with Teams coming from the Island and the US, we can’t really start
early. But it’s a good problem to have
because it tells you there is a lot of interest in Sevens Rugby right now. We will try and play as many Social games as
we can early since this is the Division with the most entries."
With the
forecast is calling for a sunny Saturday, the organisers are looking forward to a
fun-filled, competitive day of Rugby with a few surprises expected both on and
off the field. There is talk of a ‘slip
& slide’ being built, there will be lots of food and music along with a beer
garden to quench one’s thirst during the day.
Since
this is a BC Rugby endorsed tournament, there will be points up for grabs in
both the Elite Men and Elite Women’s Divisions.
The two leading Men’s Teams in the Series, James Bay AA and Burnaby Lake
Lighthouse will be looking to add more points to their tally and put some
distance between them and the rest before the final stop. These two Teams met in the Finals of the
Buccaneers 7’s to kick off the series.
Burnaby Lake Lighthouse is the defending champion this weekend and leads
the series over James Bay by 14 points.
James Bay will be looking to narrow that gap before the end of the
series.
Burnaby
Lake Lighthouse has wrapped up the Elite Women’s Division, winning all the
tournaments they have entered so far, but they have not won their own tournament
in three years. They plan on changing
that this weekend.
There is
not a lot of serious Rugby going on this weekend in the Lower Mainland so come
on down to Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and enjoy some entertaining sevens
Rugby.
