The third annual Abbotsford International Rugby Sevens tournament kicks off Saturday morning at 9:00am. The 2011 edition will feature three divisions, 12 international teams and 14 club/rep sides.
Twelve teams in the International Division will compete for the $5,000 cash prize with the runner-up taking home $1,000. The competition will feature local sides Tigersharks (Whiterock), Burnaby Lake, South Seas Connection (Victoria), Dog River Howlers (Sask.) and Valley High (Canada). Touring sides include the British Army (UK), Fijian Ambassadors (Fiji), Old Puget Sound (USA), Kena, Cayman Islands, Mexico and Ratu Filise. The international competition kicks off at 9:00am with the Fijian Ambassadors taking on the Tigersharks at Rotary Stadium Field.
The winner of the Men's Elite competition will take home $500.00 and will be awarded 16 points in the standings of the BC Sevens Series. BC Club sides eligible for the points include Chilliwack, Vancouver Rowing Club, Abbotsford and the Brit Lions. Other teams competing in the Elite include Old Puget Sound-2, Valley Boizz, Bayside Fijian Selects and Del Rey RFC.
Burnaby Lake will look to stay top of the BC Sevens Series Women's Division when they take on Abbotsford, the Emerald City Mudhens (Washington), Capilano RFC, the Misfits and the Seattle Breakers.
