Vancouver, BC: The storm is coming. On July 8th, over 400 age grade rugby players will descend on the University of British Columbia for the annual BC Rugby Provincial Regional Championships (PRCs). One of the largest regional youth rugby tournaments in North America, the 2011 PRCs are scheduled for July 8-10 with a total of 19 teams now confirmed.
The PRCs serve as the final selection tool for BC's provincial teams who are set to compete at the 2011 National Championships Festival in Calgary. The tournament also provides an introduction to representative level rugby for many athletes around the province.
Held annually in early July at UBC, the PRCs are a three-day display of the future of rugby in BC and Canada. The opportunity to represent one's region is an honour for young athletes who compete under the crest of their sub-union.
The 2011 Under-18 Women's division will feature four teams; Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and the Cariboo. In previous years, female age grade players competed in a U19 championship which has now been restructured. The 2010 women's U19 division was won by Vancouver.
Competing in this year's Under-18 Men's division are the defending champions Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island North, Vancouver Island South, Thompson-Okanagan Kelowna, and Thompson-Okanagan Kamloops.
The largest division of the PRCs is the Under-16 men's age grade. This year's tournament will feature the reigning champs Vancouver North, as well as the following teams; Vancouver West, Vancouver East (Burnaby), Fraser Valley East, Fraser Valley West, Fraser Valley Central, Vancouver Island South, Vancouver Island North, and Thompson Okanagan.
