After conducting five regional camps across the country and assessing more than 160 Under-20 athletes, the National Women's U20 Program has selected the team that will represent Canada at this year’s U20 Nations Cup. Scheduled to take place in Santa Barbara, California July 11th- 24th, the U20 Nations Cup will feature matches versus the traditional participating Nations of England and USA with the addition this year of a U20 squad from South Africa.

Speaking with Canadian U20 Head Coach Neil Langevin, he outlined the success of the recent Regional Camp Initiative.

"The National team coaching staff went coast to coast this spring looking for talent. Clubs, schools, and provinces all helped out by identifying and developing players to move to the international stage. With the 2016 Olympics a definite reality for some of these athletes, this group's development is an important part of the medal quest.“

Asked to comment on the final selection of the 26 named athletes, Coach Langevin said, “The 26 selected players are a diverse group from across the country and will be expected to perform well at this summer's Nation Cup. Coach Barz and I are anticipating an eager talented squad."

Assistant Coach Beth Barz echoed these sentiments stating, “There was a lot of talent at the five regional camps; it was a fantastic program opportunity as this was the first time we had conducted the coast to coast assessment in the athletes home regions. We are going into the Nations Cup with an extremely talented group of young athletes.”

Canada’s U20 team will prepare prior to departure to Los Angles with a camp at Shawnigan Lake School, directly following this year National Women League (NWL) event. The team of 26 selected athletes plus 10 non-traveling reserves will benefit from seven days of preparation time together under the leadership of U20 Head Coach Neil Langevin, Assistant Coach Beth Barz and Women’s National Program Head Coach John Tait.

Coach Barz identifies what an important opportunity the preparation camp serves. “The prep time that we have planned this year will be a significant asset to the program and the team’s preparation. The investment in time will be beneficial to the overall women’s program and the individual athlete’s development.”

National Program Head Coach John Tait will be in attendance at the BC-based camp and is keen to continue development for the overall National Program. With the initial preparation underway for major fixtures such as the 2013 Sevens World Cup, 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup (15s) and the inclusion of Sevens Rugby in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Tait knows that amongst this group of young athletes there are future stars of Canada’s Women’s Rugby Program.
