Mill Bay, BC: The 2011 British Columbia High School Girls Rugby Association championships wrapped up on Saturday, May 28 with the Carson Graham Eagles lifting their seventh triple-A title in the past eight years.
The Eagles capped off an undefeated season with a convincing 50-0 victory over the Cowichan Thunderbirds in the grand final hosted at Brentwood College. Jessica Neilson led all scorers with 18 points, notching two tries and four converts. Dakota Conrad recorded a brace of tries, with further scores coming courtesy of Gen Bittorf, Claire Bunton, Alex McCawley and Kathlene Martin. Alex Harden tacked on a conversion to round out the scoring.
In the double-A title match, Heritage Park of Mission, BC, downed Shawnigan Lake School 3-0. Robert Bateman of Abbotsford captured the Tier Two title with a 34-0 victory over Williams Lake.
Brad Baker, President of the BCHSGRA, was pleased with the outcome of the tournament which featured a number of programs from across the province.
"The tournament was a huge success," Baker said. "This year we introduced the new format of triple-A, double-A and Tier Two divisions. This allowed 24 teams to compete. The Tier Two division allows team to come to a provincial championship and soak in the atmosphere. The BC Referees Society also supported the tournament by providing top-notch referees for all three days, including iRB Panel Referee Sherry Trumbull."
Baker would also like to thank Marius Felis at Brentwood College and Mark Hall at Shawnigan Lake for their efforts in organizing the event. A special thanks must also go out to Eddie Evans and X-Treme Rugbywear for being the exclusive sponsor to high school girls rugby in British Columbia. Evans provides unconditional support to high school girls rugby.
The tournament featured 24 teams from across the province competing in three separate divisions. Full results from the competition are available on www.highschoolgirlsrugby.webs.com/apps/blog/
